LANSING - Dan Lohrmann, Michigan’s Chief Information Security Officer, has won yet another national award - Governing Magazine’s 2008 Public Official of the Year. He was the only security official named. ANN ARBOR - David Cole, Chairman of the Center For Automotive Research, said a new clean-tech era will soon transform the auto industry with the advent of plug-in electric vehicles that do not use petroleum product for power. Cole, a keynote speaker at the TechKnow Forum 2008 in Ann Arbor, also said the economic turmoil that is helping drive down auto sales will eliminate about 20 million units of excess world manufacturing capacity, making the survivors very strong competitors in the year to come.

TROY - ConnecTech partnered this year with the Troy Chamber to recognize the best of the web, with new awards that replaces the former ICE Awards. Four categories were offered this year: Web Copywriting, Web Application Development, Graphic Design and Blogging. DETROIT - TechTown, the Wayne State University incubator, has partnered with Automation Alley and the Detroit Regional Chamber to office a soup-to-nuts incubation, business service partnership. But with hundreds of thousands of square feet of prime space available in downtown Detroit, and millions of square feet of shuttered factory space in the region, TechTown now is actively recruiting Chinese, Indian and other foreign auto parts makers who want to work with GM and Ford. LANSING - Jim Epolito, CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corp., discusses the final phases of the 2008 21st Century Jobs Fund, a program that will provide $30 million in financing to 15 or so promising technology companies in Michigan. About 50 are left after the final cut, but only two in alternative energy, a new business sector identified by Gov. Jennifer Granholm as vital to Michigan’s economic future.
